Dwells MultiPronged Media Strategy

first_imgThe event is not just for design professionals, but enthusiasts as well, which makes this event “the antithesis of a typical American tradeshow,” as O’Connor Abrams puts it, an aspect of the company’s media portfolio that establishes touch points with not only vendors and exhibitors, but its core reader base as well.“When it comes to the event space, I was struck by the fact that tradeshows in this country are these very pedantic events with aisles on a grid that are totally unimagined,” she says. “We broke the grid, if you will. When you walk into the convention center in Los Angeles for Dwell on Design, you see exhibition and experience centers, and not these aisles that you need to walk up and down on.”For Dwell on Design, five full-size homes are constructed on about 20,000 square feet of outdoor exhibit space, with about 10,000 plants covering the area, transforming the space into a neighborhood.“It’s an immersive design experience so there’s nothing tradeshow about it,” she says. The anti-trade fair concept, while intriguing on the surface, does raise some questions: How do sponsorships work? If attendees are mainly enthusiasts, why does it make sense to exhibit at all? And, how does this make sense for the publisher’s business?About 50 percent of the attendees are trade professionals, and the first day of the three-day event is for that demographic. Yet, O’Connor Abrams says many don’t leave after the trade day. During the event’s research phase to determine scale and size, exhibitors, she says, asked if the right people would be on site.“Our research shows they stay for the whole weekend and that it comes out to be 50-50 trade professionals and consumers,” she says. “We find that the people we attract are not only design-savvy consumers. It’s also not uncommon to see one of these enthusiasts walking with their blueprints for their remodel, new home or second home with their architect or designer by their side to meet with designers, vendors and suppliers. They are going ahead and purchasing, and our smaller exhibitors have a retail cash-and-carry license—it’s not uncommon to see someone walking out of the show with $2,000 worth of chairs for their kitchen.” As print continues to decline and digital often struggles to live up to the hype, events are offering higher profits than print and, for many publishers, far higher revenues than digital. Luxury consumer magazine and media company Dwell, however, is leveraging all of these different groups and treating each as equally valuable mediums for its business model.“We spent a lot of time looking at the events space for Dwell,” says Michela O’Connor Abrams, president of Dwell Media. “The driving business mission for the company is bringing modern design to anyone—anywhere, anytime, anyplace and in any form. Because of that, we really never, in a way, were a traditional publisher.”A Hybrid Trade EventIn 2005, O’Connor Abrams launched Dwell on Design, now one of the largest design events in the U.S., hosting about 30,000 attendees in 2012. last_img read more

first_img Rylo 5.8K 360 Video Camera: $250 (save $250) Best Buy I thought this might be a mistake, but, no, the weirdly named HP Laptop 15t Value is indeed quite the value at this price. However, I strongly recommend paying an extra $50 to upgrade that display to FHD (1,920×1,080), because you’re not likely to be happy with the native 1,366×768 resolution. It looks like scammers are upping their game with convincing phishing calls claiming to be from Apple, security expert Brian Krebs said in a report Thursday.  The scam starts an automated call showing Apple’s logo, address and legitimate Apple phone number that warns the user to return the call because of a data breach, according to the security website. The message then gives a 1-866 number to call back. That number is “a known phishing source,” the security analyst said. Screenshot of the spoofed Apple support number.  screenshot by CNET “The exploit is unique because it allows callers to masquerade as other callers essentially by polluting search results with junk information that makes one number look like the contact number for a real company,” Krebs wrote on his blog. “The number … to call is a known phishing source. Remember: If anyone calls you claiming that your computer is broken they are most probably lying.”Apple didn’t immediately provide a comment on the report. On its website, the company offers advice on how to deal with different scams, including phone calls. “If you get an unsolicited call from someone claiming to be from Apple, hang up and contact us directly,” the company says. We’ll repeat what we’ve said before. UPDATE Mueller Using DC Grand Jury In Russia Probe Source

first_img Share APSpecial Counsel Robert Mueller departs after a closed-door meeting with members of the Senate Judiciary Committee about Russian meddling in the election and possible connection to the Trump campaign, at the Capitol in Washington, Wednesday, June 21, 2017. (AP Photo/J. Scott Applewhite)Special counsel Robert Mueller is using a grand jury in Washington, D.C., in connection with his investigation into Russian efforts to influence the 2016 presidential election and possible collusion between Russia and top aides to the Trump campaign, a source with knowledge of the investigation confirms to NPR’s Peter Overby. The source did not want to be identified because of the sensitivity of the matter. The Wall Street Journal first reported that Mueller, a former FBI director, was using a grand jury. The latest development signals the former FBI director’s investigation is “growing in intensity,” with the grand jury beginning work in recent weeks, the Journal reported.A spokesman for Mueller declined to comment to NPR.Ty Cobb, a recently appointed White House special counsel focused the on Russia probes, said in a statement provided by White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders that he wasn’t aware Mueller had started using a grand jury.“Grand jury matters are typically secret,” Cobb said. “The White House favors anything that accelerates the conclusion of his work fairly….The White House is committed to fully cooperating with Mr. Mueller.”President Trump has maintained there was no collusion between Russia and his campaign during the 2016 election. And Trump has, at times, cast doubt on the determination of the U.S. intelligence community that Russia was behind various efforts to interfere in the election, including the hacking of emails belonging to Democratically-aligned individuals and organizations and the strategic release of those emails at key points in the campaign last year. But in a statement Wednesday announcing he had signed into law a bill imposing sanctions on Russia, Trump said he supported “making clear that America will not tolerate interference in our democratic process and that we will side with our allies and friends against Russian subversion and destabilization.”Trump has repeatedly called Mueller’s probe a “witch hunt” and some media reportshave indicated the president has looked into ways to undercut or even fire Mueller.“With respect to the impaneling of the grand jury, we have no reason to believe that the President is under investigation,” Jay Sekulow, a lawyer on the president’s outside legal team, told NPR’s Tamara Keith. The revelation that Mueller’s investigation is utilizing a grand jury comes as CNNreports investigators have zeroed in on “Trump and his associates’ financial ties to Russia as one of the most fertile avenues for moving their probe forward,” with sources telling them that the “web of financial ties could offer a more concrete path toward potential prosecution than the broader and murkier questions of collusion in the 2016 campaign.” That includes ongoing investigations into former White House national security adviser Michael Flynn and Trump’s former campaign chairman Paul Manafort. But Mueller dipping into Trump’s own personal finances is exactly what the president argued to the New York Times last month would be a “violation” of the scope of investigation delineated at the time Mueller was appointed by the Justice Department.Reuters is also reporting that grand jury subpoenas have been issued regarding Donald Trump Jr.’s June 2016 meeting with a Russian attorney who Trump Jr. was told would have incriminating information about Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton.last_img read more

Officials Nearly Half Of Puerto Rico Clients Without Power

first_imgMario Tama/Getty ImagesA man rests in a hammock, using a battery-operated light, in an area without electricity more than two weeks after Hurricane Maria hit the island in San Isidro, Puerto Rico.Puerto Rico authorities said Friday that nearly half of power customers in the U.S. territory still lack electricity more than three months after Hurricane Maria.Officials said 55 percent of the nearly 1.5 million customers have power, marking the first time the government has provided that statistic since the Category 4 storm hit on Sept. 20 with winds of up to 154 mph. Officials had previously reported power generation, which stands at nearly 70 percent of pre-storm levels.“The damage was severe,” power company spokesman Geraldo Quinones told The Associated Press. “A lot of work remains.”One of Puerto Rico 78 municipalities remains entirely without power, and it’s unclear when some electricity will be restored to the central mountain town of Ciales. Crews this week restored power for the first time to parts of the southeast coastal town of Yabucoa, which received the first hit from Maria.Quinones said power remains out across the island equally, although he wasn’t able to immediately say what percentage of businesses and homes now have electricity.Gov. Ricardo Rossello had pledged 95 percent power generation by Dec. 15, while the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has said the entire island will have power by May.Fredyson Martinez, vice president of a union that represents workers with Puerto Rico’s power company, told the AP on Friday that a recent study by local engineers found that 90 percent of industries and 75 percent of businesses already have power, meaning residential areas are disproportionately in the dark.Martinez said the company should have provided the number of customers without power a while ago. The company has said the optical fiber that helps provide that data was destroyed by the hurricane, but Martinez said officials had other ways of obtaining the information.“That is a very important number for people,” he said. “The people have a total and absolute right to know how many customers are being serviced … That way they have a better idea of how it’s progressing … and how to prepare themselves.”Martinez also said that a lack of supplies and equipment is slowing power restoration efforts, echoing an early concern by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.Puerto Rico’s governor on Friday said that he has requested up to 1,500 additional workers from electric companies across the U.S. mainland to help restore power, and said he has asked the Army Corps of Engineers to increase its capacity to provide assistance.“We understand how difficult it has been for the people of Puerto Rico who have been without power for so long,” he said. “Our administration will continue working to ensure that there are the necessary resources to complete this restoration effort after an unprecedented devastation.” Sharelast_img read more

Get rid of Modi just as he did highvalue notes CM

first_imgRaniganj/Asansol: Coming down heavily on Narendra Modi, Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee urged people to scrap him just as he had scrapped high-value notes during demonetisation.”Remember those days when you were forced to face hardships following the note ban. People got up from the bed early morning and found high-value notes had been banned. Modi said it would bring down terrorist activities but in reality, they have gone up. Just as he had scrapped the high-value notes, you scrap him off in the election by casting your votes against him,” she said while addressing two rallies at Raniganj and Asansol on Friday afternoon. Banerjee said: “Modi has ruined the country economically. People have lost jobs. 12,000 farmers have committed suicide but he is unperturbed, he is going from one state to another to narrate lies during the election meetings.” Banerjee added: “During election meetings in other states, Modi is taking the name of Mamata because he knows that in Bengal, BJP will not be able to do anything. They will get a big zero.”last_img read more

Perry Chen Kickstarter CEO steps down from his role in the middle

first_imgIt was just yesterday when the employees of Kickstarter, an American crowd-funding platform for creative projects, announced that they are forming a labor union called Kickstarter United, to secure more rights for the firm’s employees. Kickstarter could be the first major tech company comprising a union representation in the US. Today, Perry Chen, CEO, Kickstarter announced that he is stepping down from his role as a CEO at Kickstarter. Chen stated in an open letter on Kickstarter’s blog that he’s going to focus more on the high-level and long-term goals within the company in his role as Chairman of the board. Chen notes that Kickstarter has managed to accomplish a lot in just ten years. For instance, the firm has successfully funded nearly 160,000 projects from all over the world and have pledged to over $4.2 billion projects. Aziz Hasan, head of Kickstarter’s Design & Product teams, will be now handling the daily responsibilities as an ‘Interim CEO’. The Kickstarter PBC board will be working with Aziz over the next weeks and months to make his role as an Interim CEO permanent. BuzzFeed had reported earlier last year in April that after Chen returned back to the role of CEO in 2017, about 50 out of 120 Kickstarter employees had left the company. Out of these, seven of the eight members were a part of the firm’s executive team. “Chen strongly exerted his will on the company — making sudden changes to planned-out Kickstarter features, scrapping project timelines at the last minute, forcing out highly respected employees, and trying to shake up office culture in ways that struck the rank and file as simply bizarre”, mentioned BuzzFeed. Also, As first reported by the Verge, Kickstarter Union states that the firm overall has failed at manifesting its values within the workplace. The Union hopes to encourage “solidarity, transparency, and accountability; a seat at the table.” “It’s been a true honor to serve as CEO for the first five years of this company and again for the last two…10 is just the beginning. And I cannot wait to see what the next 10 years of Kickstarter will bring”, states Chen. You can check out Chen’s official letter here. Said Fred Lounsberry, CEO of the Nassau Paradise Island Promotion Board, which represents some 15 hotels and resorts on the island: “Everyone knows it’s an expensive destination, but you’ll find that with the variety of hotels available, there’s something for everyone.”Lounsberry also noted that Canada is a very important market for the destination, and that although it’s been a difficult couple years due to the exchange rate and Hurricane Matthew, business is still good.“From Canada, airport arrivals are off about 3% year to year, which isn’t bad considering the recent challenges we’ve faced. Obviously we’d like it to be better, but we also know it’ll swing back around,” he said.More news:  Sunwing to further boost Mazatlán service with new flights from OttawaWhen it does, Paradise Island and its bevy of accommodations will be ready to welcome an influx of tourists.
