Germany boss scores PR own-goal over Ozil saga at World Cup

first_img0Shares0000Oliver Bierhoff, Germany’s team director, regrets the fact that Mesut Ozil was allowed to boycott the media during the holders woeful performances at the World Cup finals after his controversial meeting with Turkey president Recep Tayyip Erdogan. © AFP/File / Daniel ROLANDBERLIN, Germany, Jul 6 – Germany team boss Oliver Bierhoff implied Mesut Ozil should have been dropped from the World Cup squad over a pre-tournament scandal — then back-tracked in an embarrassing twist on Friday.Ozil, 29, is one of a group of senior players slammed for their woeful performances at the World Cup as Germany finished bottom of their group in Russia. The Arsenal midfielder refused to comment about a controversial meeting on the eve of the finals with Turkey president Recep Tayyip Erdogan which sparked questions about his loyalty to Germany.Bierhoff admits it was a mistake to allow Ozil to maintain his silence as the controversy cast a shadow over the German camp.“We have never compelled players in the German national team to do something, but always tried to convince them when it comes to certain things,” Bierhoff, Germany’s team director, told Friday’s edition of Die Welt newspaper.“We did not succeed with Mesut. And in that respect one would have had to consider whether to refrain from playing him.”However, in a television interview later Friday, Bierhoff backtracked.“First of all, I’m sorry, I was wrong,” he told ZDF.“We will not put any players in the stocks like that.”Bierhoff admitted that he and three German football association (DFB) officials had approved the quotes to Die Welt. The embarrassing public relations own-goal is the latest example of the clumsy handling of the Erdogan scandal by the DFB.Ozil and Ilkay Gundogan, who both have Turkish roots, were booed by German fans in pre-World cup friendlies after posing for pictures with Erdogan.Manchester City midfielder Gundogan presented him with a signed club shirt on which he had written “to my president”.Gundogan denied the meeting was politically motivated, but Ozil refused to comment. He was the only member of the 23-man squad allowed to miss a media day at Germany’s pre-World Cup camp.Germany midfielder Mesut Ozil could have made his last international appearance after a series of woeful displays during the holders’ disastrous World Cup campaign. © AFP/File / Patrik STOLLARZBierhoff says the issue should have been handled better.“They fact that Mesut and Ilkay took the pictures did not bother the team so much, but the debate went on and, in retrospect, I would have tried to deal with this issue more decisively,” Bierhoff admitted in the Welt interview.Ozil was slammed on social media for woeful World Cup displays in the shock group stage defeats to Mexico and South Korea having been dropped for the last-gasp win over Sweden. There is no doubt Ozil, who has made 92 appearances for Germany, could be one of a number of 2014 World Cup winners who have played their last international. On Tuesday, Loew confirmed that he will remain as Germany’s head coach and Bierhoff also ruled out resigning on Friday. However, as effectively the number two in the Germany setup, he anticipates “profound changes” after the dismal campaign in Russia for which he said the entire squad should take “collective responsibility”.Bierhoff says Germany’s management know they “gambled away credit” and have “registered” that fans feel alienated from the team. He said the team management take that feeling of alienation “very seriously”.Bierhoff says Loew will “sort out and reorganise everything. He will question everything, including our style of play. And then the question will arise as to which players we need.”0Shares0000(Visited 1 times, 1 visits today)last_img read more

China Goes After “Illegal” Online Maps

first_imgmike melanson Xinhua, the Chinese news outlet, is reporting this morning that the Chinese government will be implementing new standards that are aimed at preventing “state secrets being disclosed and uncertified maps published online.”The rules are an update to standards adopted one year ago, and, according to the Xinhua article, require “all Internet map servers to keep servers storing map data inside the country and provide public Internet protocol addresses.” We have to wonder how might this affect Google and the location-based-services market in China. The updated rules will also require that all map servers must “have no record of information leakage in any form in the past three years,” and violations exposing state secrets can receive jail sentences of seven to 10 years. The new rules, the article states, also pertain to maps downloaded or copied to mobile devices.Hiding government sites from online maps is certainly nothing new, but the Xinhua article makes several points that make us wonder what new implications these regulations might have. For example, it mentions that the new rules require “all Internet map servers to keep servers storing map data inside the country and provide public Internet protocol addresses”. How will this affect Google, which just recently moved its servers to Hong Kong? How will other maps services, such as Bing Maps, be affected? The article also mentions “a Japanese who measure 195 locations inside Longyan and located 80 of them on his map” who received “administrative punishment”. Is China looking to effectively outlaw the LBS boom we’ve seen in the U.S. and other countries? It would seem so. The article gives another example, citing “three Germans who collected geographihc information […] and later mapped these in computers.” Heck, we do that daily with applications like Gowalla and Foursquare. Internet censorship is nothing new, but it surely sounds like these rules are about to step it up a notch. China is the world’s largest mobile market and geo-locational technologies are booming, but these new regulations could have some serious effects. We asked Google if it had any comment on how this might affect its operations there, but have not yet received any response. Someday Well Appreciate Alabama And Clemsons Historic Dominance

George Mason. Leicester City. Buster Douglas. These narratives are the reason we keep coming back year after year.Recently, though, it seems like the improbable has taken a back seat to the foreseeable — at least in a few major American sports. On Monday at 8 p.m. Eastern, the Alabama Crimson Tide and Clemson Tigers will clash in the College Football Playoff final. It will mark the fourth consecutive season the two will have met in either the finals or semifinals. On the hardwood, the Cleveland Cavaliers have battled the Golden State Warriors in the NBA Finals in four consecutive seasons.1That streak, however, will … not continue. And on the ice, the Washington Capitals have skated into the Pittsburgh Penguins in the second round of three consecutive Stanley Cup Playoffs. But though it might seem like it happens all the time, it’s actually pretty rare for the same teams to square off in the postseason year after year. For example, the MLB playoffs date back to the late 19th century and feature only three instances of teams meeting three seasons in a row.2The Anaheim Angels and Boston Red Sox played each season from 2007 to 2009, the Kansas City Royals and New York Yankees played each season from 1976 to 1978, and the New York Yankees and New York Giants played each season from 1921 to 1923. The NFL playoffs have seen a single instance of teams meeting exactly four years in a row3The San Francisco 49ers and Green Bay Packers played each season from 1995 to 1998. and a single instance of teams meeting five years in a row.4The Oakland Raiders and Pittsburgh Steelers played each season from 1972 to 1976. In the WNBA, the Minnesota Lynx and Phoenix Mercury played in four consecutive playoffs from 2013 to 2016. In the men’s NCAA basketball tournament, there have been eight instances of teams meeting in three consecutive tournaments.5Seattle and Oregon State played each season from 1962 to 1964, Utah State and Arizona State played each season from 1962 to 1964, UCLA and San Francisco played each season from 1963 to 1965, UCLA and New Mexico State played each season from 1968 to 1970, UCLA and Long Beach State played each season from 1970 to 1972, Providence and Pennsylvania played each season from 1972 to 1974, and Utah and Kentucky played each season from 1996 to 1998. And in the women’s NCAA basketball tourney, Notre Dame and UConn faced off in the Final Four, in either the semifinals or finals, an incredible five consecutive times from 2011 to 2015. And in college football, where turnover among top-tier programs is unavoidable and injuries are prevalent, it’s striking that the same two contenders are about to produce a tetralogy. After bruising, monthslong schedules, we’re left with orange and crimson once again.Even though the teams are familiar, there’s still plenty to be excited about in Monday’s title game. Don’t let the betting line fool you; this year’s installment promises to be the best matchup yet between the two schools. In college football, the playoff is so new that it’s harder to look at consecutive matchups in a historical context. But we can guess at which teams might have faced off in a playoff by looking at the teams that ended each season since World War II in the top four of Elo ratings. This year’s Alabama squad ranks first (96.9) of all Football Bowl Subdivision teams in that time frame, and Clemson ranks 15th (91.6). Each enters the game racking up more than 525 yards and 44 points per contest, so it will no doubt be the best offensive matchup we’ve seen in the playoff between the two programs. Compared with each previous meeting, this will be the worst Alabama defense Clemson has faced and the best Tigers’ defense the Tide has played — though the two teams are separated by only about 4 points of defensive efficiency.Alabama’s program has never been known as a high scorer, but it now features the most efficient offense of any team in the past 14 years. But the Tide will stare down a defensive line that is months away from playing in the NFL,6With the notable exception of Dexter Lawrence, who remains suspended over a banned substance found in a drug test. which is likely why the Tigers tout the nation’s third most-efficient defense since 2005.Quarterbacks under Alabama head coach Nick Saban are often more game manager than gunslinger and generally operate in a system that skews conservative. Not this year. No team averages more yards per passing attempt than Alabama’s 11.34. Tua Tagovailoa and Jalen Hurts have each posted Total Quarterback Ratings that would rank in the top five among quarterbacks with at least 100 action plays in a season since 2004.7The first season for which we have data for that stat. In total, Alabama QBs have contributed 247.09 expected points on passes this year, 105.8 more than any previous season under Saban and the fourth-most by any team in a season since 2004, the first year for which data is available. The passing attack has accounted for 50 touchdown passes8To just six interceptions. and a team Total Quarterback Rating of 94.1, the best marks produced by an SEC offense over at least the past decade. The offense of Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney features an elite rushing attack, and quarterback Trevor Lawrence could become the first freshman QB to lead a team to a national championship since Oklahoma’s Jamelle Holieway in 1985. Where the team is most improved, however, is in its ability to dominate the line of scrimmage on the defensive end. “They wanted to be the best ever,” Swinney said of his defensive line, which leads the nation in sacks (52), quarterback contacts9Which measures the total number of times opposing quarterbacks were hit by a team’s defense. (312) and pressure rate10Which is the percentage of dropbacks in which the opposing quarterback was sacked, was under duress or was hit by a team’s defense. (43.7 percent). Under defensive coordinator Brent Venables, the unit averages 7.96 expected points added per contest on run defense, the fifth-best mark since the statistic was first tracked in 2004.The trophy case at both schools is getting full: Alabama is looking for its third title in the past four years, while Clemson is looking for its second in the past three. But don’t think these two programs are approaching the game as just the humdrum, foregone conclusion of their seasons. The matchup may have become predictable to us as viewers, but the teams are as eager as ever to face off for college football’s ultimate prize.“It is Clemson,” Alabama tight end Irv Smith Jr. said. “So it is a little more personal.”Neil Paine contributed research.Check out our latest college football predictions. read more

Ranieri hails Fulham win as a step in the right direction

first_imgClaudio Ranieri admits Fulham’s 3-2 victory over Southampton is a step in the right direction and went on to hail Aleksandar Mitrovic as one of the best strikers in the world.Ranieri’s took over from Slavisa Jokanovic as Fulham manager with the west Londoners rooted to the bottom of the Premier League, having lost their last six matches in a row in all competitions. However, the Cottagers were resilient in their hard-fought 3-2 victory over the Saints thanks Mitrovic’s double.“It is a little step, but an important step for the players, for everybody, for the fans,” Ranieri told Sky Sports. “We had to work hard. The match was 3-2 but could have been many more for us, for them, but I am happy.Official: Tottenham sign Fulham youngster Ryan Sessegnon Andrew Smyth – August 8, 2019 Tottenham have sealed another transfer deadline day deal to sign the highly-rated Ryan Sessegnon from Fulham.“When we were one down, I wanted to see how we reacted and it was very good, amazing. At 2-2 we again had to react, and this is the spirit that I like.“The players arrive together this week, and I only had two days with them. It is not easy to work in this condition, but it is okay. Of course, we have to work more, more, more.“I asked the players to fight until the end. We played a good match but we conceded too many chances to the opponent. We have to improve a lot, to work hard, to improve tactically.last_img read more

Battery team gets a charge out of lignin

first_img Journal information: Science (Phys.org) — Creating energy from wood waste has progressed from novel idea to renewable energy work in development. Researchers from Poland and Sweden are using a waste product from the paper making process to develop a battery. That material is lignin. Olle Inganäs, professor of biomolecular and organic electronics at Linköping University in Sweden and Grzegorz Milczarek, a researcher at Poznań University of Technology in Poland, have completed a study that shows how it is done. They maintain that the insulating qualities of lignin derivatives can be combined with the conductivity of the polymer polypyrrole to create a composite material that effectively holds an electric charge. Lignin acts as the insulator and polypyrrole as a conductor, holding an electric charge. Lignin is the substance found in plants, and it is stripped out of wood as a waste product during the paper-making process. In the researchers’ paper, “Renewable Cathode Materials from Biopolymer/Conjugated Polymer Interpenetrating Networks” published in Science, the authors provide more details on lignin and their methods.”Brown liquor, the waste product from paper processing, contains lignin derivatives. Polymer cathodes can be prepared by electrochemical oxidation of pyrrole to polypyrrole in solutions of lignin derivatives. The quinone group in lignin is used for electron and proton storage and exchange during redox cycling, thus combining charge storage in lignin and polypyrrole in an interpenetrating polypyrrole/lignin composite.”A clear advantage of their discovery would be in the ready availability of a natural material such as lignin as opposed to dependence on metal oxides such as those used in lithium-ion batteries. The researchers themselves, however, emphasize that their work needs further and extensive study; they recognize this is not at a stage for industrial-style development. These rechargeable batteries are still limited, according to the researchers, because they slowly lose their electric charge as they sit idly. Milczarek and Inganäs also found that various lignin derivatives perform differently in the cathode, depending on how they are processed. With continued investigations, it may be possible to optimize the batteries. Another implication to a “wood” battery may be in cost, versus existing batteries, as there would not be a reliance on precious metals. “The advantage of using a renewable material for charge storage is the enormous amount of this material that is already being produced on Earth by growing plants, which contain about 20 to 30 percent lignin,” according to Inganas. “It is also a low-value material, currently being used for combustion. Lithium-ion batteries, on the other hand, require metal oxides and some of those materials, such as cobalt, are rather rare.”According to the International Lignin Institute, after cellulose, it is the most abundant renewable carbon source on Earth. Between 40 and 50 million tons per annum are produced worldwide as a mostly non-commercialized waste product. Lignin. Get rid of Modi just as he did highvalue notes CM

first_imgRaniganj/Asansol: Coming down heavily on Narendra Modi, Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee urged people to scrap him just as he had scrapped high-value notes during demonetisation.”Remember those days when you were forced to face hardships following the note ban. People got up from the bed early morning and found high-value notes had been banned. Modi said it would bring down terrorist activities but in reality, they have gone up. Just as he had scrapped the high-value notes, you scrap him off in the election by casting your votes against him,” she said while addressing two rallies at Raniganj and Asansol on Friday afternoon. Banerjee said: “Modi has ruined the country economically. People have lost jobs. 12,000 farmers have committed suicide but he is unperturbed, he is going from one state to another to narrate lies during the election meetings.” Banerjee added: “During election meetings in other states, Modi is taking the name of Mamata because he knows that in Bengal, BJP will not be able to do anything. They will get a big zero.”last_img read more
