Kevin Durant’s Menacing Defense Leads the Way for Warriors

first_imgOAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Kevin Durant is growing a little tired of questions about his ability to play defense.“Underrated?” Durant responded when recently asked about the perception of his D. “My coaches don’t feel like that.”Neither does he, and KD’s menacing, 6-foot-9 presence from the paint to the perimeter is a big reason unbeaten Golden State is closing in on its second championship in three years. While best known for his sensational scoring and shot-making from every corner of the court, Durant has been tough on LeBron James so far in these NBA Finals by smothering the Cavs superstar. The Warriors are two wins from a title going into Game 3 at Cleveland on Wednesday night.Durant is chasing his first championship and seems determined to do whatever it takes. So versatile with his length and ability to alter shots, he even played center during Sunday’s Game 2 when Draymond Green dealt with foul trouble in the 132-113 victory.“I don’t think there’s many teams in the league who their backup is better than their starter,” Green said. “So I think that’s a luxury that we have with KD here, and when I went out with foul trouble, obviously he — to say pick up the slack is kind of a ridiculous term, because he’s a great player, an MVP, one of the best players in the world. So just the way he played on the defensive end, the way he played on the offensive end, he’s been doing it all playoffs long, but in these Finals, he’s really picked it up, and it’s been huge for us.”Durant and Green have set the tone all season on the defensive end, establishing an intensity and toughness — and the rest of the Warriors had no choice but to do more during Durant’s 19-game absence this spring with a knee injury.“If we’re locked in on the defensive end, we’ll score enough points,” Green said. “Even on an off night, we’ll score enough points.”After his NBA Finals failure five years ago against James and the Heat, Durant vowed to become a legitimate, respected defender who could make nearly as much of an impact blocking shots and crashing the boards. He insists he can do even more.“I’ve gotten better, and 2013 is when I feel I really turned the corner as a defender. Around 2012, that’s when coaches stopped thinking they could go at me and get a basket or get me in foul trouble,” Durant said. “But I don’t expect anybody on the outside who really doesn’t know the game to look at me as a defender because once you’re labeled something that’s what you’re going to be. But I feel the last four or five years I’ve definitely continued to get better and better, and smarter. I have the physical tools, but it’s also about mentally knowing what to do.”Sure, James still notched his record-tying eighth career Finals triple-double and Kevin Love and Kyrie Irving had big nights. Yet Durant, Andre Iguodala, Klay Thompson and the others kept the pressure on the Cavs.Durant blocked five shots to go with 33 points, 13 rebounds and six assists after going off for 38 points and eight assists in Thursday’s Game 1.“His defense was amazing, and we needed it. Especially with Draymond out,” coach Steve Kerr said. “It’s a small game and you got shooters everywhere and you have to be able protect the rim with LeBron coming downhill, with Love posting up and Draymond’s on the bench. So that’s a pretty scary proposition for us. I thought that Kev’s defense was unreal, and it was probably the key to the whole game.”It could be that Durant’s defense will quiet the critics at last, especially if he comes out a winner after that scrutinized move from Oklahoma City last July to join the super-Warriors.“I don’t feel like I get picked on or people call sets just to try to score on me. That hasn’t happened in a while,” he said. “I’ve grown leaps and bounds from where I was. I feel like I’ve been a solid defender in this league for a while.”With all of their offensive firepower, the Warriors often turn a stretch of timely defensive stops into scoring spurts that can swing the momentum. Or, in many cases, give them just the jolt they need to put a game out of reach for good.“I operate under the assumption that our guys know what to do and they know their system,” Golden State assistant and defensive specialist Ron Adams said. “We have an eclectic system. There’s freedom offensively, and we have some freedom defensively, and we’re good at it.”When the Warriors added Durant, JaVale McGee, Zaza Pachulia and David West to a roster that blew a 3-1 Finals lead to James and fell short of a repeat last year, many wondered if they would have enough in the middle to defend the rim.“It was a question mark for some people going into the season, losing (Andrew) Bogut and some other guys,” general manager Bob Myers said. “Ron is interesting. He’s always had good defensive teams. And we take pride in it, we care about it. I know the offense gets most of the attention but our players, they work at it, collectively, individually. They want to be a good defensive team. We try to do it all year. Sometimes it’s better than other times, but this is the time of year you really need it the most. For us, we view it as important as our offense.“It’s not as sexy, but it’s important.”JANIE McCAULEY, AP Sports WriterTweetPinShare0 Shareslast_img read more

GMs push into new technologies expected to boost peertopeer car sharing

first_imgTORONTO — General Motors signalled a major pivot towards new technologies and mobility platforms when it announced the closing of its Oshawa assembly plant, but it will be playing catch-up to start-ups that have pioneered in the field. One of the spaces it’s pushing into is peer-to-peer car sharing, which GM added to its Maven app in July in the U.S., as it tests out new models of transportation in an evolving market.“What we truly believe is as society progresses, shareable assets will be the most desirable to own,” Julia Steyn, vice-president of urban mobility and Maven at GM, said at a recent technology conference.“People don’t want anymore, to have the dream that their parents had, which is they don’t want half of their paycheque to go to housing and transportation. And so that’s just fundamentally what’s happening in the world.”Still in a pilot phase, the peer-to-peer platform allows GM customers to rent out their vehicles, offsetting some of the costs of ownership.“The wasted assets that the car represents when it sits there 95 per cent of the time, idle, is ridiculous. So you want to be able to monetize it,” Steyn said.Canadians don’t yet have the option of using Maven’s peer-to-peer sharing option and its more conventional service of renting company vehicles is only available in Toronto, but Steyn said the company plans to “aggressively grow in Canada.”When it does expand the service to Canada, it will find competition in Turo, which has been operating a peer-to-peer car sharing service in Canada for more than two years and in the U.S. for a decade.Turo, however, welcomes the news of Maven’s expansion plans.“It just shows that this type of car sharing model is becoming more mainstream,” said Cedric Mathieu, director of Turo Canada.“And I do think the more players in the space, the more people will hear about it, and the benefits of this model.”The model allows drivers to list any vehicle on the app, with a few restrictions on its age, mileage, and condition, and then rent it out along a similar idea to Airbnb.“The concept is simple, but the mission is pretty ambitious, because it’s really about putting the world’s billion-plus cars to better use,” said Mathieu. The company believes the platform solves many of the issues such as parking, variety and supply that have prevented other car-sharing efforts from delivering on the promise of the concept. The efficiency of the model and the technology behind it, has allowed for rapid growth, Mathieu said.  “You can grow this extremely fast. That I think really is shown by our numbers in Canada. In just two and a half years, we now have 16,000 cars listed, 4,000 cars available to book on a daily basis.”The company says that as of early November, cars listed on Turo had been shared for 3.2 million hours this year, or about 133,000 24-hour rentals, while car owners are earning an average of $600 a month. The revenue helps those who need to own a car offset the costs, while allowing those who can generally do without a car to get access to one when they need it at a potentially lower cost, said Mathieu. As the first-mover in Canada, Turo has also pushed to solve the insurance issue of renting out a personal vehicle for money. The company has partnered with Intact Insurance to provide a separate insurance product that only kicks in for rentals and is separate from the owner’s primary insurance. Intact has partnered with Uber on a similar model. The system is still evolving, so owners looking to rent their vehicles still need to check if their insurance allows the system, as do renters who might want to use their credit card insurance. Turo is also only available in Ontario, Quebec and Alberta because of insurance issues in other provinces, but both Intact and Turo are working to expand. But while the company has signed up thousands of people, experts don’t expect a quick shift away from ownership. Some estimates suggest that 20 per cent of mobility will move to shared mobility in the next couple of decades, said Shauna Brail, a director at the University of Toronto’s urban studies program.“It is a slow transition, but it is a really significant transition, and it’s one that absolutely impacts the bottom line of these established automotive firms, which is why they’re all involved in looking at new models and investing probably billions of dollars in a variety of new models.”As the market grows and companies fight for market share, the lines between each will blur, Brail said.  “We’re no longer looking at automotive firms and car rental agencies, and car sharing, we’re just looking at mobility.” Ian Bickis, The Canadian Presslast_img read more

This very commercial city is mostly office buildings and has been called “soulless” by many tourists. The Experts Known As Ice Meisters Create Perfect Olympic Skating Surfaces

first_imgFrancois-Xavier Marit/AFP/Getty ImagesRussian athletes compete with Britain during the curling women’s round-robin session on Feb. 14. Curling ice is textured with tiny dots called pebbles. In the Winter Olympics, where races can be won or lost by thousandths of a second, tiny imperfections can make all the difference.Nowhere is this more true than in the ice venues, where skilled technicians called “ice meisters” have honed their expertise over years of crafting the perfect surface.Make that surfaces: It turns out that all ice is not created equal.Depending on the sport, the ice might need to be softer or harder, colder or warmer, textured or smooth.Take long track speedskating, raced on the 400-meter rink at the Gangneung Oval, where ice meister Mark Messer is in charge.Messer, from Calgary, Alberta, explains that long track speedskating requires the coldest ice of any Olympic sport: between 14 and 21 degrees Fahrenheit. It’s also the hardest ice.“We’re trying to get as little friction as possible,” he explains, “so we have to make a balance between grip and glide. We need to have enough grip so that the skate can get a good push off it. But then we want them to glide as far as possible, so that there’s less effort expended for the long distance.”Long track ice is built to be about 1 inch thick, and, Messer says, it needs to be as dense as possible to make it stronger. To accomplish that, the ice team filters the water to take almost all the minerals out.Ed Jones/AFP/Getty ImagesSouth Korea’s Cha Jun-hwan competes in the men’s single skating short program. Figure skaters need warmer, thicker, more supple ice so they can dig in for jumps.“We leave a little bit in there to kind of hold everything together,” he says, “and the other thing that we have to get out is air.”Standing rinkside as skaters take practice runs around the pristine, gleaming Oval, Messer has the look of a satisfied craftsman.“Yeah, it looks good,” he says, noticing a dusting of what looks like light snow kicked up in the corners. “When they’re skating and the ice is hard, you get a little puff of snow, and if they’re goin’ in there and there are chunks comin’ out, then we know we’ve gone a little bit too hard.”Good ice, he says, has a certain sound, too: “Very nice and quiet. If it’s not good ice, the blades will kinda grind in the ice. And it’s a nice and clean sound here.”Messer, who has made ice in five Olympics, strives for perfection.“Our mantra is that we don’t say, ‘That’s good enough.’ It’s always, ‘Is that as good as it can be?’ And that’s what we try to do here.”So far in the Pyeongchang Olympics, long track speedskaters have set six Olympic records on the Oval. Nothing makes Messer happier.“I still get a thrill when I see people crossing the finish line with a good time,” he says. “That’s incredible. We take a huge pride in that.”Skaters will tell you they know instantly if the ice is great or not.“One of the first things we do when we step on the ice is, like, ‘How’s this ice?’ ” says Lana Gehring, who’s on the U.S. short track speedskating team.Amin Mohammad Jamali/Getty ImagesSkaters compete in the 1,500-meter women’s short track. The ice for short track speedskating is thicker and warmer than long track ice. Hockey ice is warmer still.Speedskaters get a lot of information transmitted through a blade that’s just a millimeter thick.“All that input is coming directly up to our body,” she says, “so we’re able to tell right away if it’s dense, if it’s grippy, if it’s breaky, if it’s too rough.”The ice for short track speedskating is thicker and warmer than long track ice. Hockey ice: a bit warmer still. But in the games, short track speedskating shares a rink with figure skating. Two totally different sports with different ice needs are holding competitions in the same ice arena. The arena’s ice meister, Remy Boehler of France, explains that figure skaters need warmer, thicker, more supple ice so they can dig in for jumps. If the ice is too hard and cold, it will “explode” when they land, he warns. But short track speedskaters need colder, faster ice in that same venue. It takes about three hours to adjust the temperature from one sport to the other. The best way for Boehler to tell if he’s got it right? “What I use most are my ears,” he says. “I use them all the time. When I arrive, I take off my cap so I can really listen to the sound of the blades, if they’re gliding or cracking.”Roland Harrison/Action Plus via Getty ImagesThe Gangneung Oval, the venue for speedskating, is prepared before competition begins. And when the ice is great, he can tell by the skaters’ faces. They’ll take to the ice — and smile.“That’s the best feeling of all,” he says. And then there’s ice for curling — a totally different animal.Look closely at the ice sheets, and you’ll see they’re not smooth. They’re textured with tiny dots called pebbles. The ice meister of the Winter Olympics curling venue, Hans Wuthrich of Gimli, Manitoba, says his team uses pebbling cans with 25 different pebble heads to sprinkle the ice with droplets. The idea is to reduce friction.“Those wee little water droplets,” he says, “they’re the thing that touches the bottom of the curling stone. That’s what the rock actually rides on and makes it go easy. And that’s also what makes it curl.”So when you’re watching these Olympics, think for a moment about the ice meisters. They devote their lives to creating ice that’s so perfect, you’ll never notice it at all.Copyright 2018 NPR. To see more, visit http://www.npr.org/. Sharelast_img read more

Tech Giants Form Group to Pressure US Over Surveillance

first_img Apply Now » Seven of the nation’s largest technology companies have teamed to pressure the U.S. to scale back its government surveillance programs, demanding five changes in the way the U.S. compiles and uses the data of private citizens.“We understand that governments have a duty to protect their citizens,” the companies wrote in an open letter on the website for their coalition. “But this summer’s revelations highlighted the urgent need to reform government surveillance practices worldwide. The balance in many countries has tipped too far in favor of the state and away from the rights of the individual — rights that are enshrined in our Constitution. This undermines the freedoms we all cherish. It’s time for a change.”The companies involved are Who’s Who list of the American Internet: AOL, Facebook, Google, LinkedIn, Microsoft, Twitter and Yahoo. In one way or another, all were involved in the National Security Agency’s surveillance of Americans and people abroad. The companies have publicly objected to government access to data – in some cases directly through the companies’ own servers. They have also lamented that they were not able to communicate their communications with the government itself, for fear of violating the law. Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer went so far as to suggest she could be accused of treason if she made disclosures to the public.Related: Amid Surveillance Concerns, Two Companies Shut DownWhile the companies’ letter focuses on individual rights, there is also a big business implication at stake. The Information Technology & Innovation Foundation earlier this year suggested U.S. companies could lose as much as $35 billion over the next three years as businesses and individuals move their data to countries with better data protection.Indeed, Brad Smith, Microsoft’s general counsel, is quoted on the site saying as much. “People won’t use technology they don’t trust,” he wrote. “Governments have put this trust at risk, and governments need to help restore it.”The business coalition wants five key changes:1. Limits on surveillance. In short, the companies are looking for changes in the law that make it harder for the government to force businesses to give up data.2. Better oversight. The coalition is seeking reform to the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court, which approves subpoenas. The group wants that court to be more open and have an adversarial process, like the rest of the federal court system.3. Transparency to customers. A key problem for companies has been their inability to tell customers – and investors – that requests for data had been made by the NSA. The coalition wants more flexibility in disclosing subpoenas to the public.4. Data flow. The group wants the government to allow transfer of data across borders, without having to worry that the NSA will tap data centers overseas.5. Better government coordination. All of the companies operate internationally, and so are subject to different surveillance laws in different countries. The coalition wants a treaty or agreements to standardize practices.Related: Can This Company Save You From The NSA’s Prying Eyes?  3 min read 2019 Entrepreneur 360 List Next Article Ray Hennessey The only list that measures privately-held company performance across multiple dimensions—not just revenue.
