Ancient Bassa Town Gets Anti-Ebola Materials

first_imgOne of Liberia’s oldest townships, Gluzon Town, over the weekend proudly and for the first time benefitted from pump-buckets, chlorine and soaps to prevent the spread of the deadly Ebola Virus Disease (EVD).Gluzon in the Bassa language means under the rope. It was founded in 1902, and is located in Louisiana Township, Upper Montserrado County. It has over 147 residents.Town Chief Elijah Davies, on behalf of the town, expressed appreciation to the local women and children’s group, Global Vision for Women and Children, Incorporated (GVWC),  for the Ebola prevention supplies.“We are happy, not because of the buckets, soaps and chlorine, but because it is the first time we have   received such things since the outbreak of Ebola in the country,” the town chief said.Mr. Davies, 38, encouraged other local and international institutions as well as their District Representative Josephine Francis, to emulate GVWC’s example. In a rather happy tone, the town chief stated that since the health crisis, none of his people have contracted or died from the virus. The town chief revealed that the three main strategies he used and is still using is frequently washing hands, avoid touching people and forbidding  strangers to sleep in the town.He named Otis Gaharpah, Jarkon Morris, and Randolph Williams, as the town’s watchmen.GVWC is based in the Old Road Community, Monrovia.According to its founder and executive director, Madam Catherine Johnson, makes similar donations in and outside of Monrovia as a way to intensify the anti-Ebola awareness and sensitization campaign.A 2007 retired Lab Technician at the John F. Kennedy Hospital, Madam Johnson said that prior to commencing their campaign, the self-supported organization designed a communication strategy geared towards combating the rapid spread of the world’s largest and most deadly Ebola virus epidemic.Utilizing prepared and approved Ministry of Health and Social Welfare awareness messages,   volunteers carried out community outreach and Jehovah Witness campaign (door-to-door) activities, especially in the Old Road community and the Township of Louisiana. The GVWC director stressed that the government and its international partners alone cannot eradicate the deadly Ebola outbreak in Liberia. Instead, it must take the collective effort of every individual, institution as well as development partners in the country to defeat the virus.Besides distributing assorted Ebola prevention materials, GVWC is also engaged in agriculture. It has 15 acres of land planted in cassava in Bomi County and eight acres planted in Gluzon Town. The organization is seeking partnership with other likeminded entities to strengthen its humanitarian efforts.Share this:Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)last_img read more

It Will Not be Peaceful For Metta In OKC

James Harden and Metta World Peace will meet again tonight.Tonight will not be so pleasant for Metta World Peace in Oklahoma City.  And he does not plan to make it any easier.Instead of showing remorse about violently elbowing Oklahoma City’s James Harden three weeks ago – an act that earned the Los Angeles Lakers’ forward a seven-game suspension – the former Ron Artest said he will not offer an apologetic handshake to Harden. That only will make the booing he will hear every time he touches the ball. Why won’t he show more contrition?“I don’t shake hands with substitutes,” he said.Harden, who won the league’s Sixth Man of the Year Award last week,  was not fazed. “I’m not worried about him or what he has to say,” Harden said.World Peace told reporters that mebers of the Thunder intentionally ignore the pre-game ritual of players shaking hands as a sign of mutual respect. “I shake everybody’s hand before the game, but Oklahoma City, they don’t shake hands … Kendrick Perkins and now (Russell) Westbrook don’t shake hands either.”Lakers captain Kobe Bryant admitted the OKC fans will use the situation as motivation. “The crowd is obviously going to have a field day with that (World Peace’s return). I’m sure their players will generate some type of energy from it. For us, we just got to keep our poise and do what we do.” read more

George Mason. Leicester City. Buster Douglas. These narratives are the reason we keep coming back year after year.Recently, though, it seems like the improbable has taken a back seat to the foreseeable — at least in a few major American sports. On Monday at 8 p.m. Eastern, the Alabama Crimson Tide and Clemson Tigers will clash in the College Football Playoff final. It will mark the fourth consecutive season the two will have met in either the finals or semifinals. On the hardwood, the Cleveland Cavaliers have battled the Golden State Warriors in the NBA Finals in four consecutive seasons.1That streak, however, will … not continue. And on the ice, the Washington Capitals have skated into the Pittsburgh Penguins in the second round of three consecutive Stanley Cup Playoffs. But though it might seem like it happens all the time, it’s actually pretty rare for the same teams to square off in the postseason year after year. For example, the MLB playoffs date back to the late 19th century and feature only three instances of teams meeting three seasons in a row.2The Anaheim Angels and Boston Red Sox played each season from 2007 to 2009, the Kansas City Royals and New York Yankees played each season from 1976 to 1978, and the New York Yankees and New York Giants played each season from 1921 to 1923. The NFL playoffs have seen a single instance of teams meeting exactly four years in a row3The San Francisco 49ers and Green Bay Packers played each season from 1995 to 1998. and a single instance of teams meeting five years in a row.4The Oakland Raiders and Pittsburgh Steelers played each season from 1972 to 1976. In the WNBA, the Minnesota Lynx and Phoenix Mercury played in four consecutive playoffs from 2013 to 2016. In the men’s NCAA basketball tournament, there have been eight instances of teams meeting in three consecutive tournaments.5Seattle and Oregon State played each season from 1962 to 1964, Utah State and Arizona State played each season from 1962 to 1964, UCLA and San Francisco played each season from 1963 to 1965, UCLA and New Mexico State played each season from 1968 to 1970, UCLA and Long Beach State played each season from 1970 to 1972, Providence and Pennsylvania played each season from 1972 to 1974, and Utah and Kentucky played each season from 1996 to 1998. And in the women’s NCAA basketball tourney, Notre Dame and UConn faced off in the Final Four, in either the semifinals or finals, an incredible five consecutive times from 2011 to 2015. And in college football, where turnover among top-tier programs is unavoidable and injuries are prevalent, it’s striking that the same two contenders are about to produce a tetralogy. After bruising, monthslong schedules, we’re left with orange and crimson once again.Even though the teams are familiar, there’s still plenty to be excited about in Monday’s title game. Don’t let the betting line fool you; this year’s installment promises to be the best matchup yet between the two schools. In college football, the playoff is so new that it’s harder to look at consecutive matchups in a historical context. But we can guess at which teams might have faced off in a playoff by looking at the teams that ended each season since World War II in the top four of Elo ratings. This year’s Alabama squad ranks first (96.9) of all Football Bowl Subdivision teams in that time frame, and Clemson ranks 15th (91.6). Each enters the game racking up more than 525 yards and 44 points per contest, so it will no doubt be the best offensive matchup we’ve seen in the playoff between the two programs. Compared with each previous meeting, this will be the worst Alabama defense Clemson has faced and the best Tigers’ defense the Tide has played — though the two teams are separated by only about 4 points of defensive efficiency.Alabama’s program has never been known as a high scorer, but it now features the most efficient offense of any team in the past 14 years. But the Tide will stare down a defensive line that is months away from playing in the NFL,6With the notable exception of Dexter Lawrence, who remains suspended over a banned substance found in a drug test. which is likely why the Tigers tout the nation’s third most-efficient defense since 2005.Quarterbacks under Alabama head coach Nick Saban are often more game manager than gunslinger and generally operate in a system that skews conservative. Not this year. No team averages more yards per passing attempt than Alabama’s 11.34. Tua Tagovailoa and Jalen Hurts have each posted Total Quarterback Ratings that would rank in the top five among quarterbacks with at least 100 action plays in a season since 2004.7The first season for which we have data for that stat. In total, Alabama QBs have contributed 247.09 expected points on passes this year, 105.8 more than any previous season under Saban and the fourth-most by any team in a season since 2004, the first year for which data is available. The passing attack has accounted for 50 touchdown passes8To just six interceptions. and a team Total Quarterback Rating of 94.1, the best marks produced by an SEC offense over at least the past decade. The offense of Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney features an elite rushing attack, and quarterback Trevor Lawrence could become the first freshman QB to lead a team to a national championship since Oklahoma’s Jamelle Holieway in 1985. Where the team is most improved, however, is in its ability to dominate the line of scrimmage on the defensive end. “They wanted to be the best ever,” Swinney said of his defensive line, which leads the nation in sacks (52), quarterback contacts9Which measures the total number of times opposing quarterbacks were hit by a team’s defense. (312) and pressure rate10Which is the percentage of dropbacks in which the opposing quarterback was sacked, was under duress or was hit by a team’s defense. (43.7 percent). Under defensive coordinator Brent Venables, the unit averages 7.96 expected points added per contest on run defense, the fifth-best mark since the statistic was first tracked in 2004.The trophy case at both schools is getting full: Alabama is looking for its third title in the past four years, while Clemson is looking for its second in the past three. But don’t think these two programs are approaching the game as just the humdrum, foregone conclusion of their seasons. The matchup may have become predictable to us as viewers, but the teams are as eager as ever to face off for college football’s ultimate prize.“It is Clemson,” Alabama tight end Irv Smith Jr. said. “So it is a little more personal.”Neil Paine contributed research.Check out our latest college football predictions. read more

11 migrants dead 200 missing in Mediterranean

first_imgEleven migrants have died and nearly 200 are missing after two boats sank off the coast of Libya, UN agencies said Monday citing survivors, in the latest such tragedy. The first involved an inflatable craft which left Libya early Friday with 132 people on board, only to start deflating a few hours later, before overturning. Some 50 survivors were picked up by a Danish container ship, the Alexander Maersk, which was alerted to divert by Italian coastguards and dropped them off on Sunday in Pozzallo, southern Sicily.Representatives of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and the International Organization for Migration (IOM) were able to meet them on Monday to hear their accounts.Survivors told them that women and children were among those missing. At the same time, the bodies of 10 women and one child were found Monday on a beach in Zawiya, 50 kilometres (31 miles) west of Tripoli, according to an official for the Libyan Red Crescent. Then on Sunday seven migrants-a woman and six men-were rescued by Libyan fishermen and coastguards off the coast of the Libyan capital. An IOM spokesman who met them said they had set out on a boat with at least 120 people on board, including about 30 women and nine children. In all more than 6,000 migrants were rescued Friday and Saturday in international waters off the coast of Libya and brought to Italy, while several hundred were rescued in Libyan waters and taken back to Libya. The number of people leaving Libya in the hope of starting a new life in Europe is up nearly 50 percent this year compared with the opening months of 2016.With most departures coming in the warm summer months, the trend points to around 250,000 people arriving over the course of 2017. Some 500,000 migrants were registered in Italy in the three years spanning 2014-16.last_img read more

Myanmar team to visit Dhaka next week to talk Rohingya issue

first_imgA Myanmar team will arrive in Bangladesh next week to discuss the mass exodus of Rohingya, an official said Tuesday, amid huge diplomatic efforts to find a durable solution to the crisis. The team are “coming early next week,” Bangladesh’s Foreign Secretary Shahidul Haque told AFP, saying they would be working on the Rohingya issue but not giving further details.A senior foreign ministry official said the team was expected to be led by Myanmar’s Minister of the Office of State Counselor, Kyaw Tint Swe.Dhaka had earlier invited the minister for talks before the latest eruption of violence in Myanmar’s Rakhine state triggered one of the world’s worst refugee crisis in recent decades. The announcement comes as the UN said 480,000 Rohingya Muslims have fled to Bangladesh’s southeastern border region since August 25.Between the new arrivals and some 300,000 Rohingya who were already living in the area due to previous violence in Myanmar, there are now nearly 800,000 refugees in camps around the Bangladesh border town of Cox’s Bazar that are bursting at the seams. The situation has forced new arrivals into makeshift shelters in grim conditions, and sparked warnings that epidemics, including cholera, could easily spread. The bilateral talks come as Dhaka mounts a huge diplomatic effort to find a permanent solution to the Rohingya problem and make Myanmar take back all the refugees to their homeland in Rakhine. The latest military operation was sparked by attacks carried out by Rohingya militants on police posts on August 25.Bangladesh’s prime minister Sheikh Hasina on Thursday proposed creating UN-supervised safe zones inside Myanmar to protect Rohingya Muslims fleeing a military crackdown.Hasina accused Myanmar authorities of laying landmines on the border to prevent the Rohingyas from returning and said the United Nations must take immediate measures to find a solution to the crisis. She laid out a five-point plan that called for the protection of the Rohingyas in “safe zones that could be created inside Myanmar under UN supervision.”The United Nations has described the military operation as “ethnic cleansing” and French President Emmanuel Macron went further, describing it as a “genocide.”Myanmar must stop the violence and “the practice of ethnic cleansing”, agree to allow a UN fact-finding mission, ensure the return of refugees and abide by a report that recommends citizenship for the Rohingya, said Hasina. Rohingya are currently denied Myanmar citizenship. There has been mounting international outrage over the plight of the Rohingya, prompting the UN Security Council this month to call for an end to the violence.last_img read more

Merkel condemns farright xenophobic attacks

first_imgGerman Chancellor Angela Merkel speaks during a session at the lower house of parliament Bundestag in Berlin, Germany, 12 September 2018. Photo: ReutersGerman Chancellor Angela Merkel condemned xenophobic attacks and the use of Nazi slogans in a robust speech to parliament on Wednesday after the most violent far-right demonstrations in decades exposed deep divisions in the country. In an unusually rowdy session in the Bundestag (lower house) later, far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) deputies stormed out of the chamber after a Social Democrat (SPD) accused them of being “unsavory” right-wing radicals.Protests by right-wing militants in the eastern city of Chemnitz two weeks ago after the fatal stabbing of a German blamed on two migrants have reignited a fierce debate about Merkel’s 2015 decision to let in more than a million refugees.”There is no excuse or reason for hunting people down, using violence and Nazi slogans, showing hostility to people who look different, who have a Jewish restaurant, for attacks on police officers,” Merkel told the Bundestag.”We will not allow whole groups in our society to be quietly excluded,” she said, adding that Jews, Muslims, Christians and atheists all belong in German society, and stressing that human dignity was paramount. Before Merkel took the podium, the head of the AfD group in the Bundestag said Germany’s “domestic peace” was at risk.”As disgusting as Hitler salutes are, I would like to remind you that the really serious event in Chemnitz was the bloody deed (committed) by two asylum seekers,” said Alexander Gauland. He accused Merkel of spreading fake news about the protests and supported Hans-Georg Maassen, head of the BfV intelligence agency who is under fire for questioning whether video footage showing rightist gangs hounding migrants were real.”The truth is, there was no hunting down of people in Chemnitz… The citizens who demonstrated were criminalised,” said Gauland.”Mrs Chancellor, you have nothing more to offer the people of this country than obstinacy, dogmatism and insults. Barricade yourself up in the chancellery away from reality!”After Maassen took questions from a parliamentary committee behind closed doors about his comments on event in Chemnitz, Interior Minister Horst Seehofer said he saw no reason to dismiss the BfV chief. But the SPD said that after examining a BfV report on the violence and hearing Maassen’s defence of his disputed views that he should resign, saying it remained unconvinced he was the right person to lead the agency. The centre-left SPD is the junior member of Merkel’s conservative-led coalition. The AfD, some of whose members joined right-wing militants in the Chemnitz marches, is the third biggest party in Germany. Its lawmakers’ presence in parliament, which they entered after the 2017 election, has generated a more confrontational climate.Senior Social Democrat Johannes Kahrs launched a verbal attack on the AfD: “Right wing radicals in parliament are unsavory. Hate makes you ugly – look in the mirror!”At that, all AfD deputies stood up and left the chamber. In a statement, the party said Kahrs had compared them to Nazis and described his insults as “unacceptable”.Earlier, former Social Democratic leader Martin Schulz also condemned the AfD, ending up by saying, “You belong on the dungheap of history,” to loud applause.last_img read more

Study shows solar powered sea slugs can survive long term in the

first_img This document is subject to copyright. Apart from any fair dealing for the purpose of private study or research, no part may be reproduced without the written permission. The content is provided for information purposes only. (Phys.org) —A team of researchers from Germany and the Netherlands has found that at least two species of sea slug thought to be able to endure long periods of starvation by gleaning energy from the sun has found that the slugs can live for long periods of time without food and with or without sunlight. In their paper published in Proceedings of the Royal Society B: Biological Sciences, the team describes experiments they conducted with the slugs and then outline their findings. The two types of sea slugs (Plakobranchus ocellatus and Elysia timida) survive by eating algae, but prior research has shown that the creature can survive very long periods of starvation. Because the slugs do not digest—at least right away—a specialized subunit of cells known as an organelle, that in the algae is responsible for photosynthesis, scientists have believed that the slugs were somehow gaining energy from the sun using the cells from the algae. To test this theory, the researchers subjected several of the sea slugs to long periods of starvation under three different conditions. One group of the slugs was kept in the dark without food—another group was kept in a sunlit enclosure but was also not given any food. A third group was given a chemical that inhibits photosynthesis and was then kept in a lighted enclosure, but was not given any food either. After 55 days the researchers pulled the slugs from their enclosures and studied them to learn if there were any differences among them. Surprisingly, the researchers could not find any. All the members of all three groups survived and all lost approximately the same amount of weight. A subsequent test showed just how durable the slugs really are—the researchers put six of them in a dark enclosure and didn’t feed them for 88 days—all of the slugs survived and even appeared healthy. The results of the study disprove the idea that the slugs somehow derive energy from the photosynthesizing cells they keep alive for long periods in their bodies. The researchers suggest that the slugs may instead be allowing the cells to remain alive for long periods of time, simply to eat them slowly as time passes. This means that the cells are apparently kept alive by the sun while in the slugs body—sort of an internal farming system, allowing the slugs to survive long starvation periods, which because they move so slowly, appears a necessary adaption to ensure survival. Image (ii) shows a slug after 55 days of starvation in the dark. Credit: Proceedings of the Royal Society B: Biological Sciences, doi: 10.1098/rspb.2013.2493 More information: Plastid-bearing sea slugs fix CO2 in the light but do not require photosynthesis to survive, Published 20 November 2013 DOI: 10.1098/rspb.2013.2493AbstractSeveral sacoglossan sea slugs (Plakobranchoidea) feed upon plastids of large unicellular algae. Four species—called long-term retention (LtR) species—are known to sequester ingested plastids within specialized cells of the digestive gland. There, the stolen plastids (kleptoplasts) remain photosynthetically active for several months, during which time LtR species can survive without additional food uptake. Kleptoplast longevity has long been puzzling, because the slugs do not sequester algal nuclei that could support photosystem maintenance. It is widely assumed that the slugs survive starvation by means of kleptoplast photosynthesis, yet direct evidence to support that view is lacking. We show that two LtR plakobranchids, Elysia timida and Plakobranchus ocellatus, incorporate 14CO2 into acid-stable products 60- and 64-fold more rapidly in the light than in the dark, respectively. Despite this light-dependent CO2 fixation ability, light is, surprisingly, not essential for the slugs to survive starvation. LtR animals survived several months of starvation (i) in complete darkness and (ii) in the light in the presence of the photosynthesis inhibitor monolinuron, all while not losing weight faster than the control animals. Contrary to current views, sacoglossan kleptoplasts seem to be slowly digested food reserves, not a source of solar power.center_img © 2013 Phys.org Journal information: Proceedings of the Royal Society B Citation: Study shows ‘solar powered’ sea slugs can survive long term in the dark (2013, November 20) retrieved 18 August 2019 from https://phys.org/news/2013-11-solar-powered-sea-slugs-survive.html Researchers discover sea slugs that stab each other in the head after copulation (w/ Video)last_img read more

Gods not dead as yet

God, is he an entity in real or merely a myth? This question has dogged mankind for long. Carrying forward the doubt-belief system, the play Krishan Vs Kanhaiya questions your faith, in the spiritual and ritual sense, in God.An adaptation of the Gujarati play Kanji Virudh Kanji, the drama satirically narrates a tale which revolves around an altercation between an atheist and god. Directed by Umesh Shukla, it casts Paresh Rawal in a pivotal role as the atheist Krishna alongwith Chirag Vora, Jimit Trivedi, Puja Gupta, Ankit Trivedi among others. Also Read – ‘Playing Jojo was emotionally exhausting’After an earthquake ravages his antique shop, Krishanlal Mehta asks the insurance company to pay the damages. However, he is in for a rude shock when the insurance company doesn’t give him the money because the disaster is not man-made but ‘made by god’. That seals it for Krishan and he decides to file a case against god himself. What follows is a very intelligent, deeply thought out and well-argued case for and against the existence of god, the role of multi-billion religious trusts, how the common man has become ‘god fearing’ rather than ‘god loving’ and the fallacies of insurance. The arguments in the court between Krishan, and god, Kanhaiya are both hilarious and raise questions about religious faith. Also Read – Leslie doing new comedy special with NetflixTo add a twist to the tale, Kanhaiya — the Lord himself — presents himself to Krishan and through witty dialogues and smart arguments gets him to see the truth about God, taking him on a journey wherein the atheist gets converted to a hardcore believer. The writer, Bhavesh Mandaliya, does an incredible job adding humour to a serious plot. The play’s focus isn’t on showing an atheist’s conversion to someone religious, rather it is about the arguments raised for and against one’s belief in a higher power. The director, Umesh Shukla, uses the script to bring that idea out through the lighting effects and stage design. Similarly Paresh Rawal’s comic timing and punches are sharp as a shooter’s and hits the bull’s eye. The length of the play- two hours and 15 minutes could have probably been reduced. read more
