Pakistan PM Imran vows not to disappoint Kashmiris at UNGA

first_imgIslamabad: Pakistan Prime Minister Imran said on Friday that he will not disappoint Kashmiris at the United Nations General Assembly and vowed to raise their plight at every international platform, after Indian revoked Jammu and Kashmir’s special status. Addressing a gathering in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir’s capital Muzaffarabad to show solidarity with the people of Kashmir, Prime Minister Khan said the Kashmir issue has been internationalised, noting that even the European Union and the British Parliament discussed the matter. Also Read – Saudi Crown Prince ‘snubbed’ Pak PM, recalled jet from US”The next week I am going to address UN General Assembly and I will not disappoint the people of Kashmir. I will stand for the rights of Kashmiris as nobody did it in the past,” he said on his scheduled address at the UNGA on September 27. The Kashmir issue has been internationalised with United Nations Security Council holding closed consultations on it for the first time in 50 years, Khan said on his second visit to Muzaffarabad after India revoked Article 370 of its Constitution and ended the special status of Jammu and Kashmir, evoking a sharp response from Islamabad. Also Read – Record number of 35 candidates in fray for SL Presidential pollsAsserting that abrogation of Article 370 was its internal matter, India has strongly criticised Pakistan for making “irresponsible statements” and provocative anti-India rhetoric by Pakistani leaders over the issues internal to the country. “The European Union, for the first time, said that the Kashmir issue should be resolved as per UN resolutions. OIC (Organisation of Islamic Cooperation) and 58 countries supported Pakistan that oppression was committed in Kashmir and that curfew should be lifted in Kashmir,” Khan said. The Prime Minister warned that India’s actions in Kashmir will result in the rise of extremism. “I want to warn India that extremism will rise as the people in Kashmir will stand up against oppression. When people are fed up, then they decide that it is better to die than being subjected to disgrace,” he said. “Even if I am subjected to this kind of treatment, I will fight against it as death is better than insult,” Khan said. Khan claimed that the February 14 Pulwama attack was carried out by a young man who was fed up with the treatment being meted to the Kashmiris. He warned that Pakistan will respond to any kind of attack by India. “If India throws a brick, we will respond with a stone,” he said. Continuing with his tirade against India over the Kashmir issue, Khan called the BJP-led government “fascist” and “supremacist”, alleging that it poses a threat to Pakistan as well as to the minorities in India. “I want to give a message to Modi… You will never succeed despite oppression because Kashmiris are not afraid of death. So you cannot defeat them, no matter what you do,” he said. Khan also said what is happening in Kashmir will be dangerous for the liberal-minded people of India. Referring to the Balakot strikes by the Indian Air Force, he said Pakistan returned the Indian pilot in a goodwill gesture as Islamabad wanted to solve all problems through talks. The Prime Minister said Pakistan’s gesture was interpreted as a weakness. “We are not afraid of anything like death. We did it because we wanted peace,” he said.last_img read more

first_imgClaudio Ranieri admits Fulham’s 3-2 victory over Southampton is a step in the right direction and went on to hail Aleksandar Mitrovic as one of the best strikers in the world.Ranieri’s took over from Slavisa Jokanovic as Fulham manager with the west Londoners rooted to the bottom of the Premier League, having lost their last six matches in a row in all competitions. However, the Cottagers were resilient in their hard-fought 3-2 victory over the Saints thanks Mitrovic’s double.“It is a little step, but an important step for the players, for everybody, for the fans,” Ranieri told Sky Sports. “We had to work hard. The match was 3-2 but could have been many more for us, for them, but I am happy.Official: Tottenham sign Fulham youngster Ryan Sessegnon Andrew Smyth – August 8, 2019 Tottenham have sealed another transfer deadline day deal to sign the highly-rated Ryan Sessegnon from Fulham.“When we were one down, I wanted to see how we reacted and it was very good, amazing. At 2-2 we again had to react, and this is the spirit that I like.“The players arrive together this week, and I only had two days with them. It is not easy to work in this condition, but it is okay. Of course, we have to work more, more, more.“I asked the players to fight until the end. We played a good match but we conceded too many chances to the opponent. Savenok/Getty Images Your shoes may very well be your next fitness and health tracker.Verily, Alphabet’s life sciences arm, has been reportedly working on smart shoes that can track your weight and movements and detect falls. As reported by CNBC, the Verily has been showing off a prototype pair to potential partners to co-develop the shoes.Sudden changes to a person’s weight can indicate health problems like congestive heart failure. Having a pair of shoes that can accurately track your weight could be a way to alert a person of a more serious condition as soon as it’s detected. The trend of wearables that can detect falls is nothing new. Last year, Apple launched its newest Apple Watch, which can detect when the wearer loses their balance. French company Helite makes protective jackets and vest for skiers, cyclists and motorcycle riders that inflate when a fall is detected. Helite also makes the Hip’Safe a belt for elderly people that inflates airbags to protect their hips in a fall. And Verily isn’t the only company working on beefing up shoes. Nike unveiled last month the Adapt BB, the latest iteration of its self-tying shoes. As if the Back to the Future-style tying wasn’t smart enough, Nike’s shoes pair up with your phone in order to collect data, make adjustments and even get software updates. It’s not known whether the smart shoes project is active or not. However, Verily isn’t the first company to pursue smart footwear. The French company E-vone announced a pair that can also track weight and detect the wearer taking a spill at CES in 2018. Verily did not immediately respond to a request to comment.First published Feb. 1, 2019 at 4:27 p.m. PT.Update Feb. 5, 2019 at 8:03 a.m. PT: Added more background information on smart shoes. In Sylhet, we are slightly ahead, but it is too close to call,’ Joy wrote on his Facebook page on Sunday.Joy made the predictions, based on the results of an opinion survey conducted in the three city corporations recently by Research Development Center (RDC) this month.Joy said the results of the survey, that covered 1,241 registered voters in Barishal City Corporation, show AL’s mayoral aspirant Serniabat Sadik Abdullah may bag 44 per cent votes as against Bangladesh Nationalist Party’s Mujibur Rahman Sarowar who may secure 13.1 per cent votes. The survey in Rajshahi, on 1,294 voters, said that AL’s Khairuzzaman Liton would get 58 per cent of votes compared to potential 16.4 of possible votes for BNP’s Mosaddek Hossain Bulbul, said Joy, also son of premier Sheikh Hasina.According to him, the survey in Sylhet, conducted on 1,196 registered voters, predicted a tight contest as the AL’s Badar Uddin Ahmed Kamran may get 33 per cent of votes while the BNP’s Ariful Haque Chowdhury 28.1 per cent.Joy is confident that results of the survey would turn into a reality as he said, “I have been conducting our opinion polls with RDC for the past five years. I have found their methods and results to be the most accurate.”Joy also called on the law enforcement and electoral officers to keep vigilance during the balloting.“I would, however, urge my party members, law enforcement and electoral officers to be vigilant for BNP attempts to seize polling centers and stuff ballots in an attempt to blame the Awami League.”last_img read more

Myanmar team to visit Dhaka next week to talk Rohingya issue

first_imgA Myanmar team will arrive in Bangladesh next week to discuss the mass exodus of Rohingya, an official said Tuesday, amid huge diplomatic efforts to find a durable solution to the crisis. The team are “coming early next week,” Bangladesh’s Foreign Secretary Shahidul Haque told AFP, saying they would be working on the Rohingya issue but not giving further details.A senior foreign ministry official said the team was expected to be led by Myanmar’s Minister of the Office of State Counselor, Kyaw Tint Swe.Dhaka had earlier invited the minister for talks before the latest eruption of violence in Myanmar’s Rakhine state triggered one of the world’s worst refugee crisis in recent decades. The announcement comes as the UN said 480,000 Rohingya Muslims have fled to Bangladesh’s southeastern border region since August 25.Between the new arrivals and some 300,000 Rohingya who were already living in the area due to previous violence in Myanmar, there are now nearly 800,000 refugees in camps around the Bangladesh border town of Cox’s Bazar that are bursting at the seams. The situation has forced new arrivals into makeshift shelters in grim conditions, and sparked warnings that epidemics, including cholera, could easily spread. The bilateral talks come as Dhaka mounts a huge diplomatic effort to find a permanent solution to the Rohingya problem and make Myanmar take back all the refugees to their homeland in Rakhine. The latest military operation was sparked by attacks carried out by Rohingya militants on police posts on August 25.Bangladesh’s prime minister Sheikh Hasina on Thursday proposed creating UN-supervised safe zones inside Myanmar to protect Rohingya Muslims fleeing a military crackdown.Hasina accused Myanmar authorities of laying landmines on the border to prevent the Rohingyas from returning and said the United Nations must take immediate measures to find a solution to the crisis. She laid out a five-point plan that called for the protection of the Rohingyas in “safe zones that could be created inside Myanmar under UN supervision.”The United Nations has described the military operation as “ethnic cleansing” and French President Emmanuel Macron went further, describing it as a “genocide.”Myanmar must stop the violence and “the practice of ethnic cleansing”, agree to allow a UN fact-finding mission, ensure the return of refugees and abide by a report that recommends citizenship for the Rohingya, said Hasina. Rohingya are currently denied Myanmar citizenship. There has been mounting international outrage over the plight of the Rohingya, prompting the UN Security Council this month to call for an end to the violence.last_img read more

KMC sets target of renovating 2500 clogged ponds across city

first_imgKolkata: The Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) is adopting a changed approach in renovation of dirty ponds across the city. There are around 3,500 clogged ponds spreading across 144 wards of the civic body that are in need of thorough cleaning of its water and the civic body has taken up a target to clean up 2,500 such ponds.”A considerable amount of money has been drained out from the KMC exchequer due to the method that was adopted for renovation. After renovation, the Program Management Unit (PMU) department of the KMC carried out beautification of the ponds. Now, we are just extracting the filth from the pond be it water hyacinth, plastic or any other rubbish and are then taking the necessary steps to clean the water. We are not going for any beautification. The main aim of the renovation is to ensure that the water in the ponds remain fresh for a long duration,” a senior official of the Environment & Heritage department of KMC said. Also Read – Rs 13,000 crore investment to provide 2 lakh jobs: MamataAccording to Director General (Environment & Heritage) Debasish Chakraborty, water hyacinth mats lower dissolved oxygen concentrations, prevents adequate penetration of sunrays and damages fish population. Borough I and XIV also have a good number of ponds. There are ponds in each of the 16 boroughs and the councillors have been asked to submit a list of dirty ponds in their respective wards that are in need of a facelift.
